COMICS - Levitz's comments about McDuffie/Milestone

This has been covered at LitG and Written World, ragnell's spot, among other places, but it really bugs me, so I thought I'd mention it, too. Hopefully, it'll float long enough for someone to clear it up:

The following is a DC Comics (at Wizard World Chicago) response on the question of DC doing something with Milestone/Static-
Levitz: "We keep talking about it. Nothing's come together yet. Dwayne McDuffie has been talking to Dan about bringing him into the DCU. But Dwayne's had some health issues."
Dwayne McDuffie, co-founder of Milestone, responded at his forum:
McDuffie: "Two things: Not that it's any of Wizardworld Chicago's business, but I didn't have surgery until May of this year. Eight weeks later, my doctors told me I could go back to work. Since then, I've written two comic books for Marvel, a series bible and development work for a new cartoon at Nickelodeon and sold a new animated series to BET. If Paul actually did imply that my illness interfered with ongoing negotiations, he has been misinformed.

It's been over three years since anyone from from DC Comics has spoken to me about using Static in the DCU. Dan DiDio and I had a single, preliminary discussion. I heard nothing else from DC until I was called on the phone a few weeks later by someone introducing herself as "the editor of Static Shock." I informed her that this seemed premature, as no agreement had been made between DC and Milestone. Since that call, I've heard nothing further on the matter from Dan or anyone else at DCU."
Maybe it's just a misunderstanding. I dunno. Hopefully, whatever it is, will be resolved, in a significant way, very soon.

I wanna see some Milestone stuff. Now.

Mannn, they've been doing a job on McDuffie for years. I don't think Static or any of the other heroes from the Milestone universe will enter the DCU. Lets be real. As popular as those heroes were over 10 years or so ago, and still they haven't been integrated yet? Infinite Crisis or "52" would have been a great crossover to get those heroes into the DC Universe. DC blew it bigtime.

If they were actually gonna integrate'em, yeah. That would've been the time to do so.

They still could, I suppose.

I like the Milestone U being separate, though.

I can't front though West. I do appreciate the exclusivity of the Milestone U from DC's core universe. I just wish they had more exposure to mainstream heroworld. A large populace out there still think that the Milestone heroes are "new" like they've just emerged in the last few years!

I dunno that they're familiar with the Milestone U, outside of Static.

At Heroes Con, Dan DiDio said in a panel that Wildstorm was looking into doing something with the Milestone characters, but that the process was complicated. That gives me a lot more hope than this Levitz/McDuffie situation. If they can work out a fair deal, Wildstorm would be a perfect place for the Milestone characters.

I'm also grasping onto the fact that McDuffie only mentioned Static in his post. Maybe there's still hope for some of the other characters?

I guess I could see that working, although I don't know why they'd need to be integrated into the rest of the DC Universe (I always hesitate to say "DCU," now, because it seems to refer to DC's animated continuity.)

I suppose that, for simplicity's sake, Dakota or whatever could be somewhere adjacent to DC-proper.

For some reason, that still kinda bugs me, but nowhere near as much as saying that the Milestone Universe was always a part of Superman's universe.

Good catch.
I didn't notice that. Maybe so.

I liked how they did it in the "Worlds Collide" crossover. I didn't like the crossover, just how they explained it. Everyone in Dakota thought that the DCU was fictional until they got there.

What I like about the Wildstorm possibility is that Wildstorm doesn't have one, shared universe, but that you do occasionally see their characters interacting with DC's. That's exactly what I'd want to see with Milestone. A Xombi/Hellblazer crossover would be awesome, but I wouldn't to hear David Kim constantly referring to Constantine.

I don't fully understand that last part.

Maybe it's that I don't fully understand how continuity works in the Wildstorm-verse.

Connected, but not quite... maybe?
I think I prefer a universe that's connected or not. The half-ways just seem like convenient "outs" for the writers (though that can be fun, too).
