MOVIE NEWS: Superman II returns and Returns need 2 (hundred mill)

Finally, we'll get to see Superman II the way Richard Donner, the original director, intended for it to be seen. So says Yahoo! News:
A reconstructed version of 1980's Superman II, largely featuring footage shot and ditched nearly 30 years ago, including 15 minutes worth of Marlon Brando espousing fatherly advice from "Kryp-tin," will be released on DVD on Nov. 28, Warner Home Video announced Friday.

Not a "special" or "expanded" edition, Superman II: The
Richard Donner Cut, named after the film's original director, is billed as an unprecedented do-over.

"With this DVD release, Richard Donner has become the first director in history to be able to complete a film he left during production," Warners said in a statement.
The article also mentions that Superman Returns ain't doin' so well:
TMZ.com reported this month that Warners will pass on a Superman Returns sequel unless the movie, reported to have cost as "little" as $204 million or as much as $260 million, cracks $200 million at the domestic box office. (Like Warners, TMZ.com is part of Time Warner.) As of Thursday, per BoxOfficeMojo.com, the film stood at $171 million.
Man, I'm sure this threw Warner Bros. for a loop. Who would think that Supes would be the one to tank?

I'm sure they'll make a tidy lil profit once it's ALL said and done, but I'm sure they were hoping for much more by this point.

Poor Supes.

EDIT - According to this week's LitG (Lying in the Gutters), Singer had some serious incentive for abandoning the X-franchise:
' "Also, wanna know Singer's deal? Believe me, when you read this you will understand why he jumped the X-ship when he did. Ironic that Rantner ended up kicking his ass:

"1. 10-12 million dollars just to direct.

"2. 10% of the worldwide box office gross.

"3. The lion's share of the merch (Lucas-style) and a fat slice of the DVD sales. According to my boy, this deal will drop close to 50 million fucking dollars in Singer's bank account when it's all said and done. Dude is all set. '

Apparently, some folks out here agree with you.

I haven't seen it and it's probably because there was something just missing from the trailers. And what a disappointment. I like Singer and Kevin Spacey and its too bad that Supes is struggling to the $200 mill mark. Who'da thunk it? Singer should have stuck to the X-Men franchise. The Last Stand was pretty horrible man.. He's usually box office gold except for here.
